After years of being exposed to the elements the shingles on your roof can derogate. Asphalt shingles have a strip of tar adhesive that protects your home. Roofing components start to expand and contract during seasonal changes and the seals can break under the shingles and, unfortunately, cause water and structural damage. Some signs of future problems:
These tiny ceramic particles embedded in the shingle shield the asphalt-saturated shingle mat from the drying effects of the sun. An excessive amount of granule loss, sometimes seen in your gutters, can indicate the shingles have reached the end of their life expectancy.
Moss traps moisture on the surface of roofing materials and speeds deterioration, while algae feeds on the limestone contained in asphalt shingles and leaves behind dark stains.
In Maryland, asphalt shingle roofs last approximately 12-14 years due to the climate. Over time the asphalt becomes oxidized and becomes brittle and could be an indication the sealant has lost its strength and is no longer bonding the shingles together.
Extreme heat and moisture of an improperly vented attic can become trapped underneath the shingle and cause its structure to curl. Poor roof ventilation can also cause shingles to peel as the high heat and moisture trapped inside the attic “fry” shingles from underneath.
These metal strips which bridge gaps between roofing materials and walls, valleys or roof projections (chimneys, skylights, etc.) can become dislodged or damaged by wind and ice, quickly allowing water to infiltrate.
A surprisingly high number of roofs have some form of rot along valleys, flashing, eaves or walls.
As temperatures rise, the rubber flange that prevents water from coming into your attic will dry rot and crack. This expands the rubber gasket and can cause leaks.

At Red Carpet Remodeling, we assist with a Free In-Home Comprehensive Visual Inspection of your current roof and, more importantly, your attic space.
What you need to know about our Comprehensive Visual Inspection:
Please make sure there is attic accessibility for us to take pictures of your attic. This will determine if there are any current deficiencies with your current roof and if you have enough intake and exhaust vents for proper ventilation.
After our inspection, if you feel you need or want to invest in a new roof and create an upscale look for your home without the overly high price, architectural shingles could be the perfect addition to your roof.
Architectural shingles are the newest technology. Recently, changes to standard shingles have started a new generation of asphalt roofing products. Architectural shingles provide many benefits over traditional wood shakes or asphalt shingles.
Enhanced appearance – These types of shingles allow homes to have a more customized look because of the shape and depth that they have. They can be made of a fiberglass mat base and ceramic-coated mineral granules in water-resistant asphalt.
Return on investment – Installing architectural shingles correctly will maintain or even raise the value of your home, making them the preferred shingle for homeowners.
Durability – Architectural shingles are stronger and more durable than traditional shingles. They can withstand winds of up to 130 miles per hour compared to 60-80 mph winds for older styles.
Cost – architectural roofing shingles cost more and are a higher initial investment than 3-tab shingles but they pay for themselves over time due to their durability and longevity. Note: 3-tab shingles are 3’ wide and have three 1’ sections to them. You can tell if you have this type of shingle if you can see lines that go from the gutter to the peak of the roof and are spaced 6" apart
I was very, very pleased with everything. Kenneth, the owner, Michelle, and the installers were very courteous and hard working. I just can't say enough about them. Everything was wonderful!

Aside from aesthetics, the shingles provide durability, ventilation and water protection.
Starter strip shingles help speed up the installation process and help prevent future shingle blow-offs.
Roof deck protection provide an extra layer of protection between your roof and your shingles. They help prevent wind driven rain and water from other sources from infiltrating under your shingles and causing damage to the structure of your roof.
Proper attic ventilation systems allow a continual flow of outside air through the attic protecting the efficiency of the insulation and helping lower temperatures in the living space.
Ridge cap shingles help accentuate the natural beauty of your newly installed roof. They also add multi layer protection in the highest-stress areas of your roof.
